Chapter Six

I didn’t have much time to think about Finn’s declaration when the RIP cup started the next day. I’d been assured that it was a clever pun – short for the Raiders Intensive Program as well as being a knock-out tournament.

It was run like a mini-World Cup. We had three days of Group Stage where four groups of six teams – two teams from each age band, one women’s and one men’s – played each other round robin style. After which the top four teams from each group played knockout until there was only one winner and their captain’s name was engraved on the RIP trophy.

“Today looks pretty easy,” Gemma said, looking over the timetable.

“What group are we?” Jojo asked.

“C,” Gemma said. “We’ve just got the thirteen-fourteens today.”

“Both of them?” I asked, looking over her shoulder.

Gemma nodded. “Yeah. Women’s in the morning and men’s in the afternoon.”

“Seems a bit unfair,” Jojo said.

I shrugged. “Luck of the draw I guess.”

She nodded. “I suppose. Still, we’ve got one of the easiest teams for our second match of the day.”

Gemma shook her gently. “And that’s in our favour. How will we beat Finn’s team if we don’t have some easy games?”

Jojo didn’t seem convinced of the fairness of the whole thing. “Yeah…still, I feel sorry for them.”

“Crap. Don’t. We play Miles’ team this afternoon. They’re not exactly easy.”

Suddenly, Kayla whacked me in excitement, and it was so enthusiastic that she actually knocked the wind out of me.

“What?” I wheezed.

“Chelsea’s here!”

“Where?” Lara asked as Gemma grumbled incoherently.

It wasn’t any different than I’d heard throughout the last week, but this time she was actually in my line of sight. I could see her. In person. In real life. And it did not make me feel any better. I looked up and saw someone unnecessarily put together, even with the cast on her arm.

She was tall and fit, with her strawberry blonde hair pulled into a ponytail. She wore the Rockmanns’ tracksuit and blazing white sneakers. Her smile was dazzling, practically knocking down every person she trained it on. Kayla got caught in the generic sweep and I’m sure she swooned as she dragged me closer.

Chelsea was posing for one of the university photographers. With her was Coach Lennox and Coach Davis, as well as the dean of the university, who I recognised from the website; someone like me did not get introductions to people like her. Coach Davis was smiling, as much as her face looked unused to the action.

“There you are,” Coach Davis called, and I saw her waving at Finn.

He reluctantly took his place next to Coach Davis and forced a smile.

“Tell us, Finn,” someone else wearing a Rockmanns’ polo asked. “How will the feeder program help you achieve your dreams?” I assumed they were on the PR staff.

Finn’s face was stony. Haughty arrogance was written across it like he was already European football royalty. “It won’t. Yet,” was his answer.

Those around him seemed to think it was a very amusing joke, but he didn’t crack a smile.
